Veterinary Faculty finds sustainable waste stream solution saving 65% on disposal costs

CHALLENGE

The University of Glasgow's School of Veterinary Medicine and their incumbent waste contractor were struggling to find a sustainable solution to the 400 tonnes of animal bedding waste which was being produced and going to landfill, year after year.

"Sending this waste to landfill was unsustainable and becoming increasingly expensive. While the University has a robust waste management process, we had been unable to find a way of diverting this waste stream away from landfill to recycling. When we were contacted by i-Clean we welcomed them investigating alternative solutions."

Colin Harvey, Purchasing Manager (Estates and Buildings) University of Glasgow.

SOLUTION

Following investigations, i-Clean identified a compliant, cost effective and sustainable third party solution that enabled the University to recycle all of the waste material through an alternative method of disposal, using natural regeneration processes.

A transportation solution was also identified offering further opportunity to reduce the University's costs and carbon footprint, preventing 70 tonnes of CO2te polluting the atmosphere.

RESULT

"We have saved over 65% of our costs and are recycling 100% of this waste significantly improving recycling rates and the social corporate responsibility of this site. Through adopting an alternative transport solution we have also been able to further reduce the University's carbon footprint.

I am very pleased with the result, particularly as I didn't know this solution existed. Overall, it was definitely money well spent."
